    What is the difference? 

    If you have sex regularly or don't know well in advance when you will have sex, most choose daily use.  If you have the occasional party where you go on dates or visit a club then you often know in advance when you will have sex. Below are the 2 choices with specific information for each use elaborated. 




     

Choice 1: swallow PrEP every day

The easiest way to take PrEP is: 1 pill every day.

Advantages

  •  It's easy because every day is the same
  •  You have less chance of side effects because you only take 1 pill a day
  •  You can set alarm/a reminder in your phone
  •

Tips:

  • Take 1 pill every day at the same time. (Choose an easy time; for example, at dinner or brushing your teeth).
  • Buy a pill box at the drugstore or pharmacy. This makes it easy to see when you need to take your pill.
  • Use an app like YourPrEP to track your usage. This app is there forAndroid-PrEP app and foriOS-PrEP app

Cons 

  • You also take a pill on days you don't have sex.
  • It takes 5 to 7 days before you have enough protection against HIV.


If someone directly protected want to be it is wise to start with two pills at the same time, according to the schedule of PrEP around sex. In that case, a person is protected as early as 2 hours after ingestion. 


 

Choice 2: Take PrEP when you have sex

Disadvantages of PrEP around sex
  • You have to keep a close eye on when you take the pills. It's easier to forget 1. Tip: Use the alarm on your phone to help you remember.
  • You may experience slightly more side effects. This is because you take 2 pills at once before sex.
  • You have to think about having sex in advance. Because you have to take the pills at least 2 hours before sex.

PrEP swallowing for persons with a (neo) vagina

For ladies (persons with a (neo)vagina), a different swallowing instruction applies. 


Indeed, you then take before sex first 1 pill every day for 7 days. If you want to quit again, make sure you still have Take 1 pill daily for 7 days after last sex.

This is because PrEP takes longer to penetrate the vaginal wall.

  • At home, put your pills somewhere you can see them (For example, by your toothbrush)
  • Running out of PrEP? Ask in time for a repeat prescription from your doctor or from us
  • Do you have a friend or roommate? Ask if they will help you remember to take your pill
