When can you test for STIs?
The most reliable result of your STI test will be obtained if you take the test after the window phase has ended. By window phase we mean the time that elapses between the moment of infection (the unsafe sex contact) and the demonstration of infection with a laboratory test. If you take an STI test after the window phase, it can be determined with certainty whether or not you have contracted an infection.
Can you test for STI earlier if you have symptoms?
An STI does not always produce noticeable symptoms; in fact, many STIs produce no symptoms at all. If you have STI symptoms and do not want to wait for the window phase, you can test earlier. If the results then indicate that you do not have an STI, we advise you to repeat the test.

The incubation period is sometimes confused with the window phase. Incubation time says something about the time in which symptoms may occur after infection, this says nothing about whether the infection can then be detected by laboratory testing.
