Gonorrhea symptoms

  • Gonorrhea is an STI caused by the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria (also known as gonococcus or "the clap").
  • Unlike many other STIs, gonorrhea causes uncomfortable symptoms, mainly in men.
  • The bacteria can settle in the mucous membranes of the vagina, penis, anus, throat, cervix or eyes.
  • Gonorrhea is the second most common STI in the Netherlands.
Who we are

Not sure if you have gonorrhea symptoms?

Gonorrhea is a highly contagious STI. During unprotected sex, the chance of passing on the STI from partner to partner is especially high in men: from men to women it's 50-90% and from women to men it's 20-30%. So women are more likely to get infected. Often, symptoms of gonorrhea are ignored, But if the STI is not treated, it can lead to serious problems. So, when in doubt, always do a gonorrhea STI test. If your test is positive, the STI is easy to treat with antibiotics.

For women, it's common to have no noticeable gonorrhea symptoms. Have you had unprotected sex and your sexual partner may have gonorrhea? Then always do a test just to be sure.

Our “Do I have gonorrhea” page has information all about the STI gonorrhea.

Symptoms of gonorrhea in men

Men with gonorrhea often notice clear or slimy discharge from the penis (this is where the nickname "drip" comes from). Pain when urinating, pain in the scrotum or prostate pain are also common. Other symptoms can include:

  • sore throat
  • itching or pain in your anus
  • pain in your joints (in some cases)
  • an eye infection

Symptoms of gonorrhea in women

Women don't always notice gonorrhea, but the symptoms they can get can be unpleasant. For example, you may experience:

  • green/yellow discharge from the vagina
  • vaginal bleeding between periods
  • pain when urinating
  • sore throat
  • itching or pain in your anus
  • pain in your joints (in some cases)
  • an eye infection
