Oral sex and STIs

Oral sex is the act of satisfying or stimulating vagina, penis or anus with the mouth. Also known by the names; blowjobs, cheeks and butt licking (rimming).

For a long time, oral sex was thought to be relatively safe from STIs however, this is not true. Oral sex without protection, that is, without the use of a condom or bef/rim patch, is a risk for STIs. However, the risk is much lower than if you have unsafe vaginal or anal sex.

STI are transmitted through semen, blood and contact between mucous membranes. Mucous membranes include the vagina, penis, anus and mouth/throat. An STI you can get and pass on to another unnoticed.

Blowjob, Pussy and the risk of chlamydia and gonorrhea

Chlamydia and gonorrhea are bacterial STIs. When you have oral sex; blowjob, rimming or beft without protection (a condom or dental flap) the mucous membranes of penis/vagina/anus meet the mucous membranes of the mouth/throat. During this contact, the bacteria have the opportunity to be transmitted from one person to another. A chlamydia in the throat is not often seen this could be due to the fact that chlamydia usually does not cause throat symptoms. 
Gonorrhea infection after oral sex contact is more common and also more contagious. Gonorrhea in the throat does often cause symptoms. Complaints that men and women describe with gonorrhea in the throat are a sore throat, inflamed tonsils and swollen glands.

Oral sex and the risk of syphilis 

Syphilis can be transmitted through oral sex. This STD occurs mostly in men who have sex with men (MSM). Infection occurs through damaged mucous membranes in the mouth or on the genitals, allowing the bacteria to enter the mucous membranes. Visible wounds in the mouth may indicate infection with the syphilis bacteria.

Oale sex and the risk of hepatitis B

The risk of hepatitis B virus transmission is small with unprotected oral sex. The virus is transmitted through blood and semen. However, be careful that the person giving blowjobs, rimming or fingering does not have wounds in the mouth or on vagina, penis or anus.

The risk of HIV via oral sex

Oral sex in which semen or (menstrual) blood enters the mouth is unsafe. The risk of HIV in oral sex without ejaculation in the mouth or outside the menstrual period, is negligible. If you have another STI You are more at risk because wounds, sores or tears in your mucous membranes (sometimes not visible to the naked eye) allow the HIV virus to enter easily through your mucous membranes. Therefore, make sure no semen, vaginal fluid or (menstrual) blood enters your mouth when you have oral sex and watch for wounds, sores, ulcers or cold sores around mouth, genitals or anus.

Pipes and cupping: how to do that safe?

To have assurance that you do not have an STI transmitted through the throat or mouth during blowjob, rimming or cupping, it is best to use a condom or a dental flap. There are safe condoms with flavors (strawberry, chocolate, champagne). Flavored condoms are marketed specifically for this purpose. To protect yourself when kissing or rimming, a beflap (or cut-open condom) can be used when licking the vagina or anus. You cut open the condom at the long end. The resulting patch can be grasped with both hands and placed lengthwise over the genital area to be licked. Taste condoms are also suitable for having vaginal or anal sex. When having anal sex, always use extra lubricant.

What should you do if you have throat pain? If you have throat pain, it is best not to suck, rime or lick unless you are using a condom or dental flap.
