From when does PrEP protect you from HIV?
When starting daily PrEP, a person is protected after 5 to 7 days fromhiv when it comes to anal exposure. If a person wants to be protected immediately, it is wise to start with two pills at the same time, following PrEP's schedule around sex (intermittent use). In that case, a person is protected as early as 2 hours after ingestion. For vaginal exposure, daily PrEP at least 7 days ofin advance should have started, because of the less rapid accumulation of active metabolites in the tissues of the female genital tract. Thus, this also applies to trans men who have sex through their vagina.
To quit safely, the advice is to, after anal exposure,at least 2 days continuing with PrEP. After vaginal exposure isat least 7 days.
